From Our Pastor
2021 marked the centennial of Saint Rita Parish, 1921-2021. We have evolved and envision another hundred years of growth and service to our Lord and to the community. We seek to honor the legacy members of the parish. Often enrolled at Saint Rita School as children, they stayed active throughout their adult life as parishioners. As I pastor, I value what they have valued most of all at Saint Rita: our church family, our parish school, our athletic programs, and many of the ministries Saint Rita has to offer. Those seniors who are able will keep serving, and when an individual cannot serve, our parish staff and members will strive to stay connected to them.
Our Okolona neighborhood has seen a growth in the Hispanic Catholic population. The selection of Saint Rita to anchor the Archdiocesan Office of Hispanic Ministry in 2020 provided a strong direction to our evolving parish mission. Our popular Masses in Spanish and our increasingly popular parish school meet the needs of our parishioners from diverse backgrounds. We share concern for all parishioners, without regard to nation of origin or preferred language. Our Roman Catholic faith unites us and our efforts not to assimilate new members but to integrate our diverse communities enriches our parish.
More than who we are serving, let us focus on our patron Saint, Rita of Cassia, Italy and her intercession for us. We can learn from this wife, mother, widow, and religious woman. She managed more than her share of family crises. Let our parish meet the needs of families by operating our Parish school for Catholics and others who wish to have the influence of a genuine Catholic education. Saint Rita Parish plays a significant role in the formation of our many children in the Sunday School of Religious Education or Catechism classes. We provide this resource to our parents to assist them to fulfill their role as the first teachers of faith to children.
From 2020 till now I have been serving as Pastor of both Saint Rita and Saint Luke Parishes that are independent but share a pastor. In 2024, Archbishop Shelton Fabre appointed me the Dean of Deanery Two which covers the South end of Louisville, some seventeen parishes. I was also appointed the Pastoral Administrator of Most Blessed Sacrament and Saint Simon and Jude Parishes. In these tasks outside of Saint Rita, I gain a wider understanding of the Archdiocese which I try to offer in return to Saint Rita as its primary leader. I will be guiding the Deanery Two parishes in 2025-2026 to refine our parish missions in terms of the needs of all seventeen parishes, the number of clergy, the finances, and demographics of parishes. Saint Rita will surely meet the challenges ahead as we grow and serve the Lord and the community. Come and join our family in faith, love and service of the Lord and our neighbor.
The Very Reverend T. Michael Tobin, S.T.L., Vicar Forane (Dean)., Vicar for Hispanic Ministry Archdiocese of Louisville.
